The first church of St. Peters was built and
consecrated in 326, erected on the site of St. Peter’s
tomb. The breathtaking structure that
now exists was started in 1506, and took around 150 years to
complete, testament to the scale and intricacy of this world
famous building. The Basilica and the attached Vatican
museum together form one of the great tourist attractions,
as well as being the spiritual home of well
over a billion Catholics world-wide.
The ancient Castel
St. Angelo lies
a short walk to the east, and a stroll down the Tiber will bring
you into the charming medieval district of Trastevere. With
it’s narrow alleyways teaming with vibrant bars
and quality restaurants, this area is the most popular
night life spot in city! Crossing any of the stunning
bridges over the river brings you to the charming streets
that run through Rome’s medieval heart, boasting gems like Piazza
Navona and the Pantheon.
To the north
of the Vatican lie several of Rome’s recognised
shopping streets that run off Piazza Del Risorgimento. Via
Cola di Rienzo, Viale Giulio Cesare and Via Crescenzio all
offer fantastic shopping opportunities for
all budgets. There are also all amenities like banks,
post offices and chemists to be found nearby.
The hotel lies close
to many modes of public transport that can carry you
to Rome’s
central train station Termini. Both of Rome’s airports
are roughly twenty five to thirty kilometres away, and a new
fixed fare policy set by the city council means that
the taxi to Ciampino costs 30 euro and Fiumicino (Leonardo
Da Vinci) 40 Euro, and should
take around thirty to forty minutes.
